    SCUBA:

(A brief word about Australia and the Southern Hemisphere. You don't want to travel there when it's their summer. You want to go there when its summer time in the Northern Hemisphere, which is winter time "down under." Should you go when it's their summer you'll find it's too hot. But that's not the only problem. There's also too many bugs, snakes, and flies. And you won't like that a bit(e). You won't even be able to complain, because opening your mouth might enable a fly or flies to ... well you get the picture.

  • Krabloonik's Dog Sled Rides

We like skiiing, but it's not every day you can get a lunch packed for you an go out into the mountain wilderness for several hours on a handcrafted sled with 11 well trained dogs (and sled guide). Krabloonik, is what we'd call the real thing, the geniuine article, and to learn more about it it, you might read Dan MacEachen's history of Krabloonik, which tells of origins of the sled dogs in the Aspen area at Toklat. The dogs no longer reside at Toklat, but that was their original home. Toklat sits one mile above Aspen, at the foot of a large expanse of land given to Stuart Mace (the great photographer and naturalist, by thelocal indians of the area (that Mace, a white man, earned the respect and trust of the indians enough to be given stewardship of their lands says volumes about him.  I had the honor of meeting him in the 1980s.  His son, Bruce, a former dolphin warden at Monkey Mia (see above), that we had met while in Australia, took us to visit the new home of the dogs: Kraboloonik. Stewart Mace had put the dogs in the care of  Dan MacEschen in the late 70s, and Dan got the idea to start Krabloonik.

And so it was the Bruce Mace introduced us to Dan MacEeachen on the mountain where Krabloonik is located (not far from Snowmass). We spent the day at Krabloonik, had lunch at their fine restaurant, enjoyed some fine brew, played with the dogs outside, and then had some more brew while we warmed up in front their cozy wood stove. The dogs sleds were all booked, so we just had to watch others climb into sleds and go off on a great adventure. If you're looking for something fun to do, and you're tired of visiting the same old trails, get off the trails altogether, and let these dogs take you were few have been before. Oh yes, while you're at the Krabloonik web site, you might as well read
the top ten reasons that dogs don't use computers.

    Tennis Tours:

Note that all tours are NOT run the same fashion. Reading through the listings will confirm that tours do not all have the same policies regarding flights and accommodations. Depending upon your requirements, you will find that some will fit your own needs better than others. Shortening or extending your stay and the ease and satisfaction you will experience may depend upon your individual requirements, and that's one reason to look at more than one tour plan. By the way, travel insurance is always a good idea.

    Yoga:

  • White Lotus Foundation in Santa Barbara California
It's everywhere now, and everyone is teaching it. Surprise: not all yoga teachers know what they are doing. There's nothing wrong with teaching before you know everything, but taking yoga from such a person ... that's yoga mat of a different color. The vast multitude is always willing to make compromises in selecting a teacher in order to fit yoga into their busy schedules. Ellen DeGeneres' HBO special comes to mind: "Could you speed that up, I've got TBD (Too Busy Disorder) and I'm late for yoga!"

Injuries can and will happen, and it's good to understand why and find a method that helps prevent injury (even pass along the reasons to the student). The sad fact is that most teachers haven't a clue and won't help you prevent injury. That's why you are more likely to end up injured from yoga than nearly any other form of exercise, and the reasons are not always so obvious.

So we suggest you study from the folks who train yoga teachers, and who have the ability to get you doing your yoga in a manner that will do you some good. That's White Lotus Foundation in beautiful Santa Barbara California.

    Wilderness and Wilderness Adventures:

Mountain Gorilla Expedition Offered through Mountain Travel Sobek MTS
Allen Bechky has been visiting the Virunga region since 1972, and has created this extraordinary expedition based on his many visits with the gorillas. You will have four opportunities to track gorillas in a variety of habitats that range from the jungles of Bwindi's Impenetrable Forest to the bamboo thickets of Sabinyo and the mist-clad heights of Karasimbi Volcano to the celebrated stronghold of the mountain gorillas, that the trip sold out in just a few months! Fortunately, we've been able to add two more departures - January 10-24 and September 11-25, 2004.

    Marine Mammel Encounter
  • Australia: Monkey Mia Dolphin "Resort" Shark Bay Let's not get carried away here by calling this place a "resort." Monkey Mia is really a place to come if you are interested in natural beauty and marine mammals (such as dolphins). If not, better forget it. In fact, it's really a place for marine biologists to hang their hat. You should be interested in dolphins in more than just a casual kind of way. If you're not, go to Sea World!

Located about twelve to fourteen hours drive from the closest real city (Perth), it's also a heck of long drive from where you'll rent your car or caravan. That's right. You are on your own. No one will take you here. But it's still a great place to go if you have the time and inclination, and the interest in dolphins. Western Australia is beautiful, and the real land of the "BIG SKY" and red earth. Lots of friendly people about because the long drive sort of weeds out the riff-raff. You might as well know, however, that there is no "gourmet meals" awaiting you in this paradise. The only good food you'll have is the stuff you pack and bring with you. You can buy junk, but nothing really healthy or tasty. That shouldn't stop you if you are ready for the adventure that awaits you.

Oh yes, watch out for the stone fish! They are venomous and carry enough poison to kill a grown man. Not kidding. You should exercise caution. Shuffle your feet to scare them away. Stepping on one, even in sneakers could prove fatal.  Also see the Shark Bay directory.
