The cultivation of olive trees in Tunisia
dates back to the 11th century B.C. The groves of olive trees comprise the very fabric of the Tunisian landscape. The heritage of the people, their customs, their cuisine, are all intertwined with this noble tree and its fruit.
Rich in variety, the trees of Tunisia have
a world renowned reputation. The zalmati, chemlali, meski, chetoui and chaal are just
a few of the varieties of olives grown in this Mediterranean region. In fact, the barouni
trees of California, originally came from
those cultivated in Tunisia.
Tunisia is the smallest of the North African countries and has always been home to the Lachaals. Despite its diminutive size,
Tunisia remains the second leading producer of olive oil outside the European Union.
To date, this unique commodity has only
rarely been available in the United States
as much of Tunisia’s oil has traditionally
been exported to Italy and Spain. Having
made the United States his second home,
